The vastness was near overwhelming. The dark abyss hovering just overhead threatened to swallow his eyes. If it were not for the bright blemishes of stars along the chasm, Swiftfoot might have been swallowed whole by the night. So smooth was the Silverpelt overhead that the slender tom was forced to question whether the seemingly flawless surface of the lake below was reflecting the sky, or if the sky was reflecting the lake. Because surely, every star in the sky was twinkling just beneath the surface of the dark waters.
An odd night it was, for despite its great multitude of stars, the moon was near invisible, a sliver of a crescent, not bright enough to illuminate even half the sky. The moon reclined and allowed the stars their night of glory...and gave a certain time the time needed to observe the Stars truly.
Swiftfoot, interested as he was in the nature of growing plants, and small animals scurrying in the dirt, was infinitely more curious of the stars which the very foundation of the Clans were based. And yet they knew so little about the specks of light! They had to be more than spirits of fallen warriors! As inclined as he was to believe in StarClan, (for after all, how else did leader's die and live again nine times over?) He felt their was a sort of pattern to them, and being a curious cat, it was his duty to seek those patterns out!
The slender tom drew his gaze away from the sky and padded towards a familiar tree. Here, he looked up, and could see a fading yellow star just above the third branch. Following that star to the right he could see a small cluster of stars, which he thought resembled a claw that had been twisted side-ways, and so he dubbed the pattern "Twisted Claw". He noted that the pattern seemed further to the right than it had been in Green-leaf. It was hardly in the sky presently.
Anxious of this discovery, he searched for another pattern that had seemed constant in Green-leaf, from "Twisted Claw", he searched Northward (or the cat equivalent of it) and located six bright stars which at first may seem unrelated. But when he thought of the first three in an uneven row and followed the other two and a curved line, he was reminded of a lizard lying against a tree trunk, it's head turned to see a nearby predator with its single eye. This pattern, he dubbed, "Lizard Eye".
He was shocked to see that this pattern too, had moved to the right! As final confirmation, his eyes shot further North, to a measly four stars, widely spaced and two of which were a mere dim yellow. A winding two curves could still easily join these stars. The first yellow star being a head, and the second the tail. Thus he dubbed it, "Snake Tail".
It too...had moved Right!
I see! So the stars are inconsistent! They do not sit unchanging spots on Silverpelt! They walk about as warriors do! But at a much slower pace!
Oh if only he had someone to rejoice in his discovery with!
