Some questions about positions

A couple of brief questions:

How are mentors and apprentices assigned? Should I find a mentor first before making an apprentice? If I had a cat that I wanted to put in a medicine cat apprentice position, what would I do to make that happen? (I see that the position is closed, of course. Just curious.)

Lastly, I see that WindClan's deputy slot is open. That means I can try for it, right? ^^
